November 5-9, 2011, New Delhi, India

Overview of the Seminar:

Nutritional Epidemiology in India is at a very nascent stage and needs capacity and skill building. There is limited research on and understanding of the dietary patterns and trends in India as they relate to the emerging epidemic of obesity and diabetes and the related chronic diseases. The burden of chronic diseases is huge at present and likely to increase further in India over the next several decades. Thus the need of an improved ability to recognize and evaluate the epidemiologic basis for policy and practice in chronic disease prevention is of paramount importance especially in the Indian population. The advanced knowledge of epidemiological methods, statistics, social sciences and public health is essential to understand the accelerating course of chronic disease epidemics in India and to evolve methods for tackling the same.

This seminar is mainly a short term initiative to strengthen research methods and writing skills of candidates who are interested in nutrition and related policy issues.  The short term goal of this seminar would be to provide hands-on experience of working intensely with international and national experts to gain in-depth knowledge of nutrition epidemiological skills. In addition understanding the dynamics between pure nutrition and other allied sciences (economics, demography, etc) will also be emphasized. This opportunity will capacitate students to pick up the craft of systematic, rigorous and methodic research and teaching skills which are urgently required to strengthen the public health cadre in India.
